Taylor Made Retractable Awning FAQ

What are your retractable awnings made of?
Taylor Made is committed to building an awning that you can enjoy for many years. Aluminum parts are: Front Bar, Arm, Arm support, Roller, Hood. Steel parts are: Wall, Ceiling or Roof Brackets, Mounting Bar, Crank, Hood Brackets. The tension cables in the arms are pvc coated steel.
Can I extend my retractable awning out only part way?
Yes! We get this question quite often. In fact, a partially extended awning is even stronger than a fully extended one. If you purchase a motorized unit from us and will always only partially extend your awning we can present the unit to extend to your desired shorter length. Please just request this when ordering.
How many colors and patterns do you offer?
Taylor Made awnings are currently available in the 4 most popular solid Ultima fabrics and in the entire outdoor Sunbrella fabric selection of over 160 solid and striped patterns. Visit our online retractable awning ordering page to view the huge number of color and pattern choices available.
Currently we offer extremely strong, durable white awning powder-coated frames and hardware.
Why are your awnings limited to between 10' and 18' sizes?
We have chosen the most popular size range customers normally order and have pre-assembled large quantities of these frames. We did this for two reasons, first, because the frames are already assembled your awning can arrive at your home, after ordering, sometimes in just two weeks or even less time! Many other awning retailers need up to 6-8 weeks before their awnings are ready to ship. Second, because of these bulk common sizes we were able to save many hundreds of dollars in our cost for each unit and then we pass those savings on to you.
Remember that you can always mix and match multiple awnings. A combination of several awnings can achieve larger coverage of your patio and is often more economical that just a single oversized awning.
How difficult is installing a Taylor Made retractable awning?
If you have an afternoon and a friend, installing a retractable awning is easy to do. You will need only a few common tools and 2 ladders. All you have to do is to find the studs in the mounting wall and mount the brackets, and verifying that they are level. Then it is a matter of just placing the awning onto the brackets and doing some fine tuning. Our detailed instructions provide step-by-step instructions with images to help guide you through the installation. We encourage you to review our online awning installation instructions before ordering.

Most customers install our awnings themselves in an afternoon but if you want

What are your wind, snow and rain loads?
It is so easy and effortless to open and retract our awnings either manually or with the push of a button if motorized that we recommend retracting your awning(s) after each use for safekeeping and peace of mind.
Taylor Made retractable awnings do NOT carry wind, rain or snow ratings. We recommend if the wind is strong enough that you would not be comfortable reading a book or newspaper outside it is time to retract your awning on your way inside. Taylor Made awnings can be used and enjoyed during light rain without getting ruined. However, we recommend not leaving your retractable awning(s) extended and exposed to the elements unattended. Rain showers could get stronger or winds could pick up. We recommend never retracting a wet awning and leaving it for any extended period of time. If you have to bring the awning in while still wet, make sure that as soon as possible after the sun comes back out you extend it for a little while to let the fabric completely dry out.
Never allow rain or snow to collect on your open retractable awning(s). The weight could damage both the fabric and frame and this would not be covered under warranty.
How do I measure for choosing which awning to purchase?
Taylor Made retractable awnings require only 9 inches of vertical wall space to mount to. The awning hood does not increase the height of the unit. If you do not have that much space to mount to please use either our optional ceiling mount brackets or adjustable roof mount brackets available for purchase. Our retractable awning order page has complete details on how to easily measure for your new awning.
Can the awnings attach to vinyl siding, brick or rock surfaces?
Yes it is possible to install your awning on these surfaces if proper care and preparation is taken. Taylor Made awnings come with mounting hardware designed for multiple types of surface attachment.
How much vertical wall height is needed to mount the awning?
Our retractable awnings only are 9 inches in height and do not require any additional space than 9" to mount to a wall.
What if I don't have enough wall height to mount the awning?
We sell optional ceiling and adjustable roof mount brackets if your wall height or space is not suitable for mounting an awning. Our customers will use one of these optional brackets if they can not mount their awning higher than 7.5+ feet above the floor or if windows might be obstructing the mounting location.
